Paula Rego
Paula Rego is known for her large scale narrative work which involve narrative pictures that compete for the attension of the viewer. These figures collect together many of the artists concerns at the time they were made. Like the surrealist arts, she wanted to find a way to link mind and hand that would go with gestures and conscious thought. This technique of her developed into pastel paintings called dog women. Regos friend sent her a letter containing a stroy about a woman living alone in a house which was surrouned by sand dunes. Due to the isolation the woman lived in she was driven mad, went on all fours and ate her pets. She then asked a model to pose for her in a squating postition. She then she her and used it for a starting point for her dog woman work.
